    3. Seven score and thirteen years ago, one nation broke into two pieces. These two pieces proceeded to wage war on one another leading to a four year catastrophe. The Civil War was one of the bloodiest wars ever fought on American soil. The two primary sources I have chosen are from this era. In fact, the primary sources are from the leaders of both sides of the war, North and South.
The first primary source is from Abraham Lincoln. While he was not the general of the army, he was the figurehead and the man behind every move of the North. In particular, I have chosen a primary source known as “The Gettysburg Address”. This is Lincoln’s famous speech. It speaks of the battle of Gettysburg and commemorates the lives lost of both the North and the South. This speech speaks not only of the dead yet motivates the living to keep moving so that those lost have not died in vain.
Robert E. Lee was the general of the Southern army. It is for this reason that I have chosen a letter from him to his wife as my second primary source. This letter reflects upon the Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) in which the South won. The letter is similar to Lincoln’s speech. Both choose not to dwell on the lives lost but rather on the living. In fact, Robert E. Lee writes, “Do not grieve for the brave dead. Sorrow for those left behind.”
These primary sources show a lot about the era these men lived in. They show the willingness of the country to remember the past yet embrace the future. In fact, this is represented later on through the struggle of the reconstruction of our nation. In their reunification, America was able to remember the sins of Southerners yet refrain from punishing them so severely that they were unable to move on.

John Brown, the man who started a Civil War. John Brown, a white northern abolitionist may have been a large cause to the Civil War. Brown had attempted to a liberation movement among African American slaves by attempting to arm them to have them revolt against their owners. Brown may have been unsuccessful in his attempt to start an uprising in Virginia, but his work lead eventually to the freedom of African Americans in the south.
I have chosen a speech written by John Brown, which was his last speech ever, and the capture of John Brown. In his speech John Brown talks about how he never intended for anyone to die, but he did intend to punish southerners for their unjust by freeing their slaves. He also speaks of how he believes that his hanging is unjust and how all he has done is interfered in the life of the rich and intelligent people. He then goes on to say that he has done what he has for the people who do not have the power to do it themselves.
In the Capture of John Brown, it is told by a southern troop under the command of Colonel Robert E. Lee, who would become the General for the south during the Civil War. He talks of how they had captured John Brown when he was attempting to break into Harper's Ferry, a place where they held weapons. It also talks about how they awaited for his arrival and then captured him before he made it to his destination.
Although John Brown was executed, his work went on to help start a fire in the United States which would end up causing a civil war.

    1. The Missouri Compromise was created to balance out the number of slave states and free states. It states that any state below the 36'30 parallel line, is a slave state, while any state above it is a free state. This was created so voting was fair. The reason that the Missouri Compromise is so important to this period of time is that it was about slavery. The fact that they had to go to such great lengths just to balance slave states and non slave states showed how important slavery is to the economy of the country. Slavery was especially important to the economy of the south. It helped with the cotton industry. This document was produced about 40 years before the start of the civil war and I think it is very important to the build up of the war. It was already dividing the nation into two parts. The north did not condemn slavery, mean while the south, depended on it. As Abraham Lincoln once said “A house divided against its self, cannot stand.” The nation was already being divided by this compromise and that is why I see it as another factor of the war, although it occurred many years before the war. Just because it occurred 4o years before the war, does not mean it did not apply all the way up into the start of the war. Even when the war began, the nation still used the same dividing line and that is why the Missouri Compromise is so important to our history. -Anna

    2. Both of the primary sources that I selected had to do with the confederate states and their secession. The first document stated all of the causes for the secession of the Southern states. There were sections in this document that were written by all the states that seceded and the reason that they wanted to withdraw from the United States of America. All of the seceding states wrote that slavery was one of the reasons that they seceded. The Union wanted equality between the whites and blacks but the Confederates disagreed. They needed the slaves for manufacturing reasons. Many of the Southerners are able to make a living by growing crops and they need slaves to tend to the crops and take care of them since many crops or needed to be harvested to actually make a living. This document also said that some states were seceding due to Mexico creating problems with their border. The second primary source had to do with the actual secession acts of the 13 Confederate states. All of the Confederate states declared that they were seceding or withdrawing from the United States of America. Each state had different ways of declaring their secession. A few of the states said that they were dissolving the union between their state and all the states under the compact styled “The Constitution of the United States of America”. At the end of the Civil War all of these 13 Confederate states rejoined with the Union so they did not stay departed from the Union forever. The Confederate states lost the Civil War to the Union so they were to rejoin the United States of America again.

In both of the primary sources it talks about slavery. In the Emancipation Proclamation, it talks about how Abraham Lincoln is, with the power in him, going to abolish slavery in all states. It also says that it will give these former slaves the right to vote. Also it says that even the states that tried to rebel against the country like Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and so on will have to set free their slaves. In the "House Divided" speech given by Abraham Lincoln, he talks about how in congress they cannot be split. One side cannot be half slave, and the other side cannot be half free. They need to be as one in order to get things done and survive as a country. He feels that this will not last as being divided and that eventually one side will be stronger than the other. He talks about a bill that was being passed called the Nebraska Bill and this made it so if one man wants to enslave another man, a third man cannot come in and object to it. Finally he talks about how there is one law where it makes sure that a slave has no rights. And it says that if a slave owner has a slave in a free state and the slave wants to be free the trial can happen in a slave state. These primary sources connect because of how they relate to slaves. One though is giving slaves rights the other is showing how a slave has no rights. One is before the civil war and the other is after so seeing the difference between the before and after is very easy.

    2. The first primary source document discusses the speech given by President Lincoln to honor the man who gave their lives at the battle of Gettysburg. The famous speech says that we should honor those who died by never forgetting what they fought for. Lincoln encourages the audience to become a nation again. He wants to bring the union back together. The other document was a letter sent from General Lee of the Confederate Army. The battle describes the battle of Gettysburg from the Southern general’s eyes. General Lee talks about the North’s positions of defense and different battle strategies. He also talks about the casualties in the battle. According to Lee, around 7,000 of his men were captured during the battle. He also describes the issues of Pickett’s charge. Many men were exposed to open fire and it was a severe loss. These two documents show that this was a controversial and deadly time in the U.S. the descriptions of the battle from Lee and the speech written and spoken by Lincoln himself show that there was a lot of death during the battle. It was so important that despite the casualties on both the Union and the Confederates Lincoln still came to address the lives of all who died fighting for what they believed in. This was also a very controversial time because Lincoln wants to bring the Union together whereas the reason the battle occurred was because the southern states wanted to secede. The North and the South both fought viciously for what they believed in. According to General Lee’s account of the battle, his men fought with heroic valor and fortitude. These documents show how deadly this time era was and also how torn the U.S was over the civil war, slavery, and what is right.

    2. In these two primary sources Abraham Lincoln spoke about his second inaugural address and the Gettysburg address. Both of these took place towards the end of the civil war. Abraham Lincoln was the president of the United States at the time of the civil war. The Gettysburg address honored all of the men who died fighting for the Union and to end slavery. It also honored some other people for their sacrifices. However when it comes to his second inaugural address Lincoln addresses how the nation will come back together as one. This takes when the civil war was just about wrapped up. He says that all slaves will be free and the North and South need to come together again if we want this nation to survive. After the war both sides had a lot of loses. Some lost homes, family members, and even towns were annihilated. All men even freedmen were created equal and will be treated equal. Also, he states that the government is made for the people created by the people. He wants these decisions made by the nation to be decided by the people. Lincoln wanted this nation to feel like home to everyone. What these documents say about the era is that the South wanted slavery. The North however, wanted to abolish it. The civil war was basically fought over weather the blacks were slaves or not. It is very horrible that they would kill each other for slaves, but back then the South depended on them. It also doesn’t help that a few days after the end of the war Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.

    1. The two primary sources I read were about the Emancipation Proclamation. This Proclamation was made in 1862. The Emancipation Proclamation stated that all slaves are now freedmen. Unfortunately it did not completely free all of the slaves. The south still wanted slavery and ignored everything the Emancipation Proclamation stated. If the remaining states didn't join the Union by January 1, 1863 then the slaves would legally become free. Also slaves would only become free if the Union won the war. There were several states and cities that were mentioned in the proclamation that had to free slaves. In the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln wanted the slaves to be protected and have rights. Not everyone agreed with this and that is when lots of racism and hatred toward African-Americans started. This hatred and racism still is a major problem today. Lincoln mentions the military and its role in helping the freedmen. The Emancipation Proclamation changed the Civil War from being solely about preserving the Union to freeing slaves while preserving the Union. The proclamation was not authorized in border states. However it gave the Union a new found confidence that they did not have before. Also this document helped the Union be supported by Europe. Unfortunately for Lincoln the United States of America were not united on the ideas that were mentioned in the Emancipation Proclamation. The military weakened when Lincoln discussed the Emancipation Proclamation with his cabinet. Lincoln talked to Frank Carpenter the day of this discussion and described the situation. Lincoln said that "things had gone on from bad to worse". The country was falling apart.

    1. The Civil War era changed the nation because it was the time when slaves became freedmen and were accepted as citizens of the United States. The two primary documents I chose are The Emancipation Proclamation and Frederick Douglass’s speech, What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? The Emancipation Proclamation is a document created by President Lincoln on September 22nd, 1862. It promised freedom to slaves if the Union won the war and if the Confederate states did not return to the U.S by January 1st, 1863. What to the Slave is the Fourth of July is a speech given by Frederick Douglass on July 5th, 1852. He spoke about how the slaves feel about their relationship with the United States. He spoke out against the U.S, stating them as hypocrites because they speak of independence yet a whole race is enslaved in the same country.
These two documents show the changes that occurred during the Civil War era, the biggest one being the freeing of slaves. Slavery was the main thing that caused the Civil War, and we were a nation split apart because of it. The Emancipation Proclamation shows how the nation was beginning to accept the abolishment of slavery and ready to treat all slaves as citizens. Frederick Douglass’s speech, What to the Slave is the Fourth of July, shows how slaves were beginning to speak out for their rights, and people were starting to listen and agree with what slaves had to say. The Civil War era brought many changes to the United States involving slavery, which is supported by these two sources.

    1. During the Revolutionary War, Valley Forge was a low period for the American soldiers who had struggled to survive throughout the harsh weather and conditions. It was bitterly cold, with hardly enough supplies that were necessary for the troops, such as food, water, blankets, shoes, clothing, medicine, and shelter. Desperate and in need of soldiers, whose terms were ending, and supplies, Washington sent a letter to New Hampshire, asking for supplies and soldiers, also stating the harsh conditions, "We had in Camp, on the 23rd Inst. by a Field Return then taken, not less than 2898 men unfit for duty, by reason of their being barefoot and otherwise naked." In another primary document, George Washington is writing a letter to George Clinton, being similar to the previous one. He asks for more soldiers and supplies:

"I am calling upon all those, whose stations and influence enable them to contribute their aid upons so important an occasion; and from your well known zeal, I expect every thing within the compass of your power, and that the abilities and resources of the state over which you preside, will admit."

These primary documents of George Washington's show the harsh and brutal conditions that his troops endured at Valley Forge. It also gives a view of how defeated the soldiers felt, many going back home once their term of enlistment ended. George Washington was desperate, with defeat on the faces of his struggling soldiers, but he was not giving up.

The first primary source, “A Cure for Republican Lock-Jaw” is about how on December 18th, 1860 the Crittenden Compromise was created by John J. Crittenden. This compromise was proposed to protect the institution of slavery through the amendments. The Crittenden Compromise did not pass the senate and was rejected by Lincoln immediately. Now, that I gave you a little background on the Compromise the cartoon represents the democrats moving their interests passed congress and through the tough stubborn republicans. The cane going the republican’s mouth is showing how the democrats are willing to do anything for slavery. The second primary source is “What to the Slave is Fourth of July” by Frederick Douglas. This was created on July 5th, 1852. In the speech Douglas created this was what he tried to explain. When Frederick was just a young boy he taught himself how to read and write, this showed that he was able to think and reason just like any other free man, so why is he and the other slaves who are just as bright not free as well? In this piece Douglas goes on to say that the 4th of July is not only a day of celebration for all white Americans because that’s when they founded the U.S.A. But, also a day for all slaves and former slaves because they are reminded of the broken promise of equal rights and liberty for all in the Declaration of independence. After looking at these two primary documents you can tell that this was during the civil war and reconstruction era, because the North and South are still fighting over having slavery or forgetting slavery. These documents fall under the theme of Political/Government because, during the reconstruction era all the laws that were being created had to do with abolishing slavery. Also, that was President Lincolns #1 thing to get rid of.

    1. Primary Sources
In the first document I did was about the Kansas-Nebraska Act it was created on the 30th of May, 1864. This document helped the buildup to the civil war because this act it stated that new territories could choose whether they were slave state or free state. This caused a major problem because it led to radical pro slavery people and anti-slavery people to flood the territories to try to and change the outcome. This caused a violent outcome which ended up with people fighting and killing each other this is why it is known as “Bleeding Kansas”. Some notable people from this event would be John Brown, Preston Brooks and Charles Sumner. The second document that I picked was the Fugitive Slave Act it was made on the 30th of September, 1850, this act was part of the Compromise of 1850. The main idea of this document was that if a slave ran away and made it to the union state the slave had to be returned. This was required by federal law so if the people that helped hide a slave or helped a slave escapes were at risk of being prosecuted. This was a problem for slaves because even if a runaway slave made it out of the south the south could still chase them and re-capture them. This is why most slaves started going up even further into Canada where they would be outside of the slave catchers reach. Some people that might have been associated with this could have been underground rail road workers because this made their job harder this also had to deal with slave catchers and authorities. The reason why I chose these two documents is because they are related to the problem slavery and the Civil War.

    1. This is a picture of soldiers marching across a civil war battle ground. I chose this photo because it not only represents the war that was going on; it also represents the advancement of technology. Obviously the civil war is really important to the history of our country, the reason it is so important is because of what it did. It was fight against many things, the main controversy being slavery. So many soldiers, like the ones showed in this photo, were brave enough to risk their lives for the side that they believed in. They were forced to fight against men from their own country, and so many died on the battle field. They left family and friends, to go fight for the union or against the union. Another reason that this photo is so significant to me is its representation of how technology was advancing. The Civil War is referred to as “The First Modern War.” Cameras were new back then, which allowed, for the first time, photographers to go out to the battle fields and get actually pictures of the war, something that was not possible to do in the past. The camera wasn’t the only new, or kind of new, piece of technology. Railroads were also very important to the war as well. It made transportation easier and ended up being a huge factor in the war. Yet another important piece of technology was the telegraph. The telegraph allowed for the president, generals, and other men of the war, to communicate easily and quickly.

    2. The 18th century was a time of disobedience and defiance for us, as you can see with the primary sources I have selected. My first source shows the Sons of Liberty openly rebelling against the Tea Act of 1773. Disguised as Native Americans, they boarded the ships then threw the entire load of tea into the harbor on the night of December 16, 1773. By doing this they are publicly protesting the idea of taxation without representation. Yet the rebellion does not stop there. My second primary source is the pamphlet by Thomas Paine entitled “Common Sense” which was published three years after the Boston Tea Party. In this text, Paine elaborates on the benefits of fighting for independence and encourages the colonists to do so. Also in this pamphlet, Thomas Paine gives his thoughts and opinions on British rule. He says that Britain only ruled the colonies for its own advantage and that it did not consider what would be most beneficial for them. Paine also states how ridiculous it was for an island to rule a continent. Now, what do these two documents have to say about this particular time period? They both show how the colonists in the 18th century were rebellious and wanted independence from Great Britain. When it comes to the Boston Tea Party we might be able to see how destroying 342 crates of tea would be considered rebellious. Furthermore, in Thomas Paine’s case, his pamphlet on *why we should rebel against Britain* shows a bit of sense of defiance in this era.

    1. Primary Document Analysis
In the first document about Lee’s lost order, this shows how Lee wanted to send his plan to the Confederates, but before it got there, the Union army led by George McClellan intercepted the order. With the order, McClellan knew all of the things that the Confederate army was going to do. Lee wrote on the order all of the plans and all of the people that would be involved in each route. It had all of the strategies that were going to be used for the battle and therefore McClellan could predict what was going to happen. McClellan knew exactly where the Confederate soldiers were supposed to be because in Lee’s order he specifically said where the soldiers would be. Because of this, The Battle of Antietam was the deadliest one day battle in the civil war. In the second document, this shows how the soldiers were coming in by the hundreds. The army was running out of supplies and this was because of all of the wounded soldiers in the battle. This document was written from Clara Barton’s point of view. She tried to help all of the soldiers she could but there was just too many wounded soldiers and not enough supplies. This compares to what we learned last year because it was one of the deadliest battles in the Civil war. The Civil war is what we learned last year and the battle of Antietam was a turning point in the Civil war. With these primary documents, it showed how lopsided the battle of Antietam was even before the guns were fired and how that resulted in an unbelievable amount of deaths.

This era was a critical time in the war and this little mistake may have cost the confederates the war. These documents just show how one mistake can cost you all of your soldiers and all of this death.

    1. In the first document, General Robert E. Lee was responding to President of the CSA, Jefferson Davis, about the public’s reaction to the loss the Confederates suffered at Gettysburg, and his feelings toward the biggest turning point in the Civil War. “’I am alone the one to blame… With my present knowledge, & could I have foreseen that the attack on the last day would have failed to drive the enemy from his position, I should certainly have tried some other course… Our loss has been heavy, that of the enemy's proportionally so.’” Although Lee feels that the blame should be placed mainly on himself, he believes that the enemy (Union) also took huge losses in the battle, and that his officers should not be the scapegoats of the situation to the President (Davis) and the Southern public. Lee also mentions in the letter that he will never go against Davis again, and that he believes the war can be won eventually. In the second document approximately two and a half years later, Lee is writing his Farewell to the Army of Northern Virginia for their dedication towards the effort of the war, and that losing was not their fault. “’… But feeling that valor and devotion could accomplish nothing that could compensate for the loss which would have attended the continuation of the contest [Civil War]… With an increasing admiration of your constancy and devotion to your country, and a grateful remembrance of your kind and generous consideration of myself, I bid you an affectionate farewell.’” In both documents, General Lee’s respected and distinguished character are displayed as he takes on a large part of the responsibility for the war’s result. According to both documents, Robert E. Lee can be seen as a hero even though he was on the wrong side.

  32. The Louisiana Purchase was important because it started the expansion of the U.S.A and doubled the original size of the 13 colonies. This article showed that how the house of representatives and congress assembled and discussed how they should annex the Louisiana Purchase. It explains how France agreed to give up the huge amount of land to America. It also explains how america will send its navy and army to act on annexing it on the third of march and set up arsenal in the Purchase. The presents of the army in the purchase is important because it got rid of Indians and protected it from the Spanish and English. In the picture it shows the amount of land that the ceded into the colonies and how much land was given to the United States.

The two primary sources that I chose were the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation. These two primary sources showed changes that the Civil War era caused. The first one, the Gettysburg Address, was a speech given by the president, Abraham Lincoln. He delivered this speech in Gettysburg on November 19, 1863. He talked about the soldiers who had sacrificed their lives in the Civil War. This speech was also a dedication of a cemetery for Union soldiers who died in the Battle of Gettysburg. Lincoln wanted people to honor these soldiers and remember them for their sacrifice and what they did to help the country. Towards the end of the document Lincoln discusses the hopes for the country. He says there will be a new, stronger government, and there will be more freedom in the United States. The second primary source that I picked is the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation was written by the president as well, on September 22, 1862.This document declares that if the Union wins the war, then slavery will be abolished in all of the states. It also said that the slaves in the confederate states will be freed if they did not return to the Union by the first of January.
These two primary sources are about the Civil War era. They both show that the Civil War was a rough time and resulted in lots of changes in America. The Gettysburg Address explains the deaths of the soldiers and how the people should honor them and treat the dead equal to the living. The Emancipation Proclamation shows how everyone should be treated equally by trying to abolish slavery. The Civil War was a time of change and I think that both of the primary sources that I chose support this.

In the Olympics in Russia they are not letting gays promote being gay and will be arrested if they do so. In these articles the gays are being discriminated against and not being allowed to adopt Russian babies and are arrested for even being at the Olympics. the Russians try to make up excuses for discriminating against gay like straight people don't say there straight o gay people shouldn’t say there gay. The gays were wrongfully arrested for being born different. This is similar to the African Americans during reconstruction. During reconstruction Africans Americans were discriminated against for being born the way they are. In Russia gays were arrested for being gay blacks were being kill for being black. In Russia gays were not allowed to adopt a Russian baby and in the South during reconstruction the blacks had a whole list of rule they weren’t allowed to break. The gays also couldn’t promote be gay same with blacks not being able to have a say in voting or in goverment. The discrimination in Russia is probably less violent and restricted to the discrimination of gays but is similar to the reconstruction for blacks because they were different and were being denied rights by the people and the government and hadn’t done anything to the people.
